A LifeSIGNS member has had the idea to
write to their MP, perhaps we could all contact our local
Members of Parliament and ask that they raise SI Awareness.
Kirsty Writes:
I've been contacting local and national
newspapers in a bid to raise awareness of SIAD.
I also contacted my local MSP (being Scottish!),
Dennis Canavan, who has agreed to wear a ribbon on the parliamentary
session nearest to SIAD. This got me thinking and I thought
that if as many self injurers as possible contacted their
local MP to ask if they would wear a ribbon on SIAD, then
it increases the profile of self injury and provides promotion
of SIAD.
The Letter
Dear Sir,
Current statistics from the Samaritans are that 1 in 10
teenagers engage in self injury. But that is only the figure
of the people who admit to it. This is a staggeringly large
number of young people who choose a destructive coping strategy.
The number of adults who self injure, following on from
this, is also high, estimated at 160,000 people. (Statistics
based on UK data.)
From this it is clear that self injury is an issue that
not only needs
addressing, but also education in an attempt to lessen stigma.
Many self injury groups in the UK, following suit from USA,
have adopted 1st March as Self Injury Awareness Day (SIAD).
This awareness day, however, is virtually unknown within
the UK and needs promotion. In attempting to do this I have
contacted several local and national newspapers as well
as yourself.
Self injury is so terribly misunderstood and sufferers are
affected by a tremendous amount of stigma. So, as a person
who has self injured and as a person who is attempting to
raise awareness, in the capacity that one person can, I'm
asking you for support in
raising awareness of SIAD.
I appreciate that you are an incredibly busy person and
have many other responsibilities so am not asking for a
huge commitment from you, but if you were perhaps able to
mention SIAD or perhaps wear a ribbon (red and black for
injurers, white and orange for other concerned parties)
it would be greatly
appreciated by self injurers!
Thank you, so much, for taking the time to read this mail
and thank you for taking the time to at least consider some
of the points within this mail.
Yours
